What is Medicare and who is eligible?

Medicare is a federal health plan program.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older.

It’s also available to some younger individuals with certain disabilities or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Most people qualify based on work history or that of a spouse. An individual must work 10 years, or 40 quarters, and have paid into Medicare taxes, in order to be eligible for Medicare Part A, without having to pay a premium.

  • Medicare Part A covers inpatient care, such as hospitalizations.
  • Medicare Part B covers outpatient care, such as doctor visits, labs, x-rays, medical durable supplies, etc.
Together, Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B are known as Original Medicare.
