When can changes be made to a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP)?
Standalone Prescription Drug Plans may only be changed during the Annual Enrollment Period, unless one has a Special Enrollment Period.
Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) in Medicare can only be modified during the Annual Enrollment Period, which takes place annually from October 15 to December 7. Any changes made to a PDP during this period will become effective on January 1 of the following year.
However, there are exceptions to this rule. Individuals may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if they meet specific criteria. The most common reasons that may allow for a Special Enrollment Period include:
- Moving out of their current coverage area
- Losing credible coverage from an employer or union plan
- Experiencing a change in Medicaid eligibility
